HEALTH INSURANCE FOR CUBA

>> Information sheet health insurance Cuba

Information about status quo concerning obligatory travel insurance for visitors entering Cuba as of 01.05.2010

Please note that as of 1st May 2010 all travelers entering Cuba must have an health insurance. The following procedure emerges for tourists:

probably all foreign (except US-American) travel insurances incl. health coverage will be accepted.
It seems to become a similar procedure like the use of credit cards.)
visitors who can not show any insurance certificate covering medical costs in case of illness or an accident in Cuba will be obliged to purchase insurance through a Cuban company at the airport before passport control.

Notes

The procedure at the airport is still not clear as Cuban authorities did not give any further explications so far.
At the moment we still do not know how the control at the airport is going to take place as no standardized or uniform health insurance certificates exist.
As the Cuban insurance has to be paid in CUC and as the purchase should be realized before the passport control, either a currency exchange office will be installed before pass control or foreign currencies can be exchanged directly at the purchase. However, Cubans did not decide on that yet.

IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATION by CUBA REAL TOURS

Purchase of a foreign health insurance prior to travelling to Cuba (also possible within a package of other travel insurances) and taking along this policy with you as proof.

Remark of a representative of Asistur (Cuban insurance company)

Efforts are made to avoid chaos (e.g. long waiting times) at the immigration but delays certainly will occur resulting from this new regulation.
